There are many different types of valve lockouts, but there are three main designs.
The ball valve lockout
The ball valve lockout device clamps over the valve lever. It is impeding the movement of the valve, and securing the machine.
The butterfly lockout
The butterfly lock-out is similar to the ball valve lockout. However, the wedge on the slider piece fits between the compression handle and lever rather than clamping over the valve lever, preventing the compression handle from being squeezed to activate the valve.
The gate valve lockout
A gate valve lockout device consists of two half moons hinged together on one side. The device is placed over the valve, closed and then locked out with a safety padlock or safety hasp (if more padlocks are needed). The device completely covers the valve, preventing any access to the valve.
