Steel safety padlocks

Laminated Steel Safety Padlocks for Lockout Tagout

Laminated steel safety padlocks are robust padlocks for Lockout Tagout (LOTO) applications. This category includes laminated steel LOTO padlocks from Master Lock and Brady, available in different colours, shackle heights and keying systems.

The lock body is built from multiple layers of steel. Combined with a hardened-steel shackle, this creates a strong metal construction that is particularly suitable for industrial applications where mechanical strength and resistance to physical impact are important selection criteria.

What is a laminated steel safety padlock?

A laminated steel padlock has a lock body made from multiple stacked steel plates. Both Master Lock and Brady use this construction for selected Lockout Tagout safety padlocks.

The models in this category also use hardened-steel shackles. Steel is electrically conductive, so where electrical conductivity is an important consideration, a suitable nylon or composite safety padlock may be a better choice.

Laminated steel safety padlocks are particularly relevant where a robust metal construction is preferred. Exact dimensions, cylinder design and keying options vary by manufacturer and model.

Master Lock or Brady laminated steel safety padlocks?

Lockout-Tagout-Shop offers laminated steel safety padlocks from both Master Lock and Brady. Both manufacturers provide models for Lockout Tagout, but the technical design and available configurations differ.

Feature Master Lock Brady
Construction Reinforced laminated steel body Reinforced laminated steel body
Shackle material Hardened steel Hardened steel
Shackle diameter Approx. 7 mm on the Master Lock 3 Series Approx. 6.35–7 mm, depending on the model
Shackle heights in our range 19, 38 and 51 mm 20, 38 and 51 mm
Cylinder 4-pin on the Master Lock 3 Series 5-pin on the relevant Brady LOTO series
Key-retaining Depends on the specific model Available on the relevant Brady key-retaining series
Keying options KD, KA and Master Keyed configurations KD and additional KA/MK/GMK configurations, depending on model and order

Always check the specifications of the individual product before selection. A feature listed for a Master Lock model should not automatically be assumed to apply to a Brady model, and vice versa.

Master Lock laminated steel safety padlocks

The Master Lock laminated steel safety padlocks in this category include models from the well-known 3 Series. These padlocks are designed for Safety Lockout/Tagout and combine a reinforced laminated steel body with a hardened-steel shackle.

On the Master Lock 3 Series, the lock body is approximately 40 mm wide and the shackle diameter is approximately 7 mm. Within our range, versions are available with free shackle heights of approximately 19 mm, 38 mm and 51 mm.

Master Lock offers different keying configurations for this series, including Keyed Different, Keyed Alike and Master Keyed options. Different colour options can also be used for visual identification within a Lockout Tagout programme.

Brady laminated steel safety padlocks

Brady also offers laminated steel padlocks specifically intended for Lockout Tagout applications. The relevant Brady models use a reinforced laminated steel body and a hardened-steel shackle.

Brady protects the individual steel plates with a coating to improve resistance to rust and corrosion. The relevant European key-retaining series uses a 5-pin cylinder and a key-retaining design in which the key can only be removed once the shackle is securely closed.

Within our range, Brady laminated steel safety padlocks are available with different shackle heights, including approximately 20 mm, 38 mm and 51 mm. Different colours are also available for identification within the LOTO system.

Which shackle height should I choose?

The correct shackle height depends on the lockout point and the amount of free space around the isolation device. A shorter shackle keeps the padlock compact, while a longer shackle provides additional reach and clearance.

Shackle height Consider this when...
Approx. 19–20 mm you have a compact lockout point and do not need additional shackle clearance
Approx. 38 mm you need more free space around the lockout point
Approx. 51 mm the lockout point is harder to reach or requires additional shackle clearance

Before ordering, always check both the shackle diameter and free shackle height. The shackle must fit through the lockout point and provide enough clearance for the padlock to close correctly.

When should I choose a steel LOTO padlock?

A laminated steel safety padlock can be a good choice when a robust metal construction is important. Both Master Lock and Brady position these padlocks for industrial Lockout Tagout applications where the lock may be exposed to physical stress.

For applications where low weight or electrical properties are more important, another material may be more suitable. Nylon and composite safety padlocks are considerably lighter and, depending on the selected configuration and shackle material, can be better suited to applications where electrical conductivity is an important consideration.

OSHA regulations apply specifically in the United States, although they are widely used internationally as a reference for Lockout Tagout. OSHA does not prescribe one specific padlock material for LOTO. Outside the United States, the selected safety padlock should be matched to the applicable local requirements, risk assessment, working environment and the organisation's Lockout Tagout procedure.

Steel, nylon or composite?

The most suitable material depends on the application. The comparison below can help with an initial selection:

Material Main characteristic Consider this material when...
Laminated steel Robust metal construction mechanical strength and resistance to physical impact are important
Nylon Lightweight, non-conductive lock body low weight and electrical properties are important selection criteria
Zenex composite Lightweight thermoplastic composite you require a lightweight, industrial composite LOTO padlock

Always consider the properties of the complete safety padlock. A non-conductive nylon or composite lock body does not automatically mean that a model with a metal shackle is completely non-conductive.

Compare our nylon safety padlocks and Zenex composite safety padlocks.

Keyed Different, Keyed Alike or Master Keyed?

The keying system is another important consideration when selecting a Lockout Tagout safety padlock. Different keying configurations are available within the range, depending on the manufacturer and model.

  • Keyed Different (KD): each padlock has its own individual operating key. This is a commonly used configuration for personal Lockout Tagout padlocks.
  • Keyed Alike (KA): multiple padlocks within a defined set can be operated using the same key.
  • Master Keyed (MK): a controlled master key can provide an additional level of access within the keying system.
  • Grand Master Keyed (GMK): depending on the Brady configuration, an additional hierarchical keying level can be used in larger systems.

Keyed Different is commonly used for personal Lockout Tagout because each authorised employee can retain control of their own safety padlock and key. The selected keying system should always support the organisation's LOTO procedure and key-control requirements.

For more information, see our Lockout Tagout keying systems page.

Colour coding and identification

Laminated steel safety padlocks are available in different colours. Coloured protective or identification elements can be used to distinguish between employees, departments, trades, locations or applications.

There is no single universal colour code that applies to every Lockout Tagout programme. The meaning of each colour should therefore be clearly defined within the organisation's own LOTO procedure.

Both Master Lock and Brady also offer options for key management and product identification. Available options vary by manufacturer, product series and selected configuration.

How to choose the right laminated steel safety padlock

When selecting a laminated steel Lockout Tagout safety padlock, consider:

  • the required level of mechanical robustness;
  • the manufacturer and specific product series;
  • the shackle diameter;
  • the free shackle height;
  • the space available around the lockout point;
  • the environmental conditions in which the padlock will be used;
  • any requirements relating to electrical conductivity;
  • the required keying system, such as KD, KA or Master Keyed;
  • the required colour and identification options;
  • the requirements of your organisation's Lockout Tagout procedure.
